The advantages and/or disadvantages of job promotions based on performance instead of seniority.

In Japan, we are now facing severe aging society. Considering Japan’s way to go through the economic competition within economic globalization, job promotions based on performance is essential in following two reasons.

First, it is a key to improve the performance of companies.
As companies are getting their profits from selling their products, to improve the profitability and quality of products are essential to improve the performance of companies. And to improve the profitability, it is important to pay the wages based on performance. In Japan, when permanent employment was common, based on their experiment, usually senior employees’ performance was better than newcomers’, and there was no discrepancy between seniority and performance. But since the employment system is flexing, it is important to evaluate employees not by length of belonging to the company but by their performance.

Second, it could be an encouragement to people to be creative and innovative.
When job promotions are based on performance, employees will shift from conservative attitude, not to make mistakes which might lead them fired, to aggressive attitude to make more outcomes. Even if they failed to make innovation and get fired, they can always challenge in another company with same salary.

Thus, in conclusion, I think Japanese society should shift to promoting employees by performance because it has advantages in improving the performance of companies and encourages people to be creative. (225word 25min)

My husband works for an alien corporation.

Before the company was owned by Japanese but several years ago it was bought up by the current owner.



And they started to introduce merit-based personnel systems.

It looks quite equality but several problems within this system.



First, most of middle-aged,especially over 50, Japanese workers don't get used to like this system.

They don't know how to appeal their performance to thier boss.

Therefore, if the person who works hard but his presentation ability is low , he will be judged low performance person.

Of course , I know the presentation skill is

very important for the workers, but the man who was demoted by this system was really high performance guy but his low presentation.

And after the demotion, he lost his enthusiasm.



Second, in young-aged workers, they don't have the feeling of the loyalty to their company.

If they got the severe judgement, they would resign their company quite easily.



Although the merit-based personnel systems has been introduced in these days, Japanese has not changed their feeling yet.

It seems only 30or40-something is relating this system.

But they are in their most productive years.

After the peak, would they keep them from the judgement these system?



I my opinion, the merit-based personnel systems is based on American education system.

If we allow this system to take root in our society, we should rethink the education system in schools and companies.
